世卫组织评价中国抗击疫情行动:速度之快、规模之大,世所罕见丨WHO supports China's efforts

CD君 CHINADAILY 2020-01-29

The World Health Organization and China's National Health Commission will continue collaboration on containing the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, including studying the severity and transmissibility of the virus and for China to share biological material with WHO to contribute to the development of vaccines for the virus, it said.

The WHO will also send international experts to visit China as soon as possible to work with Chinese counterparts on increasing an understanding of the outbreak to guide global response efforts, it said in a statement on Tuesday.

The statement came after the meeting between President Xi Jinping and Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the WHO, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Tuesday.

The Chinese people are now fighting a very serious battle against the epidemic, said Xi, adding that the people's safety and health always come first, and thus the prevention and control of the outbreak is the country's most important work for now.

"The epidemic is a devil. We will not let it hide," said Xi.

He said the comprehensive deployment has been made for the containment and mitigation of the epidemic, and a central leading group on battling the virus was established.

The number of reported confirmed cases of the virus rose to nearly 6,000 on the Chinese mainland as of Tuesday midnight, China's National Health Commission said. Some experts in China have predicted the peak of the outbreak will appear in about 10 days.

Tedros said it is admirable that the Chinese government has shown its solid political resolve and taken timely and effective measures in dealing with the epidemic.

President Xi's personal guidance and deployment show his great leadership capability, Tedros said.

He said that China has released information in an open and transparent manner, identified the pathogen in a record-short time and shared the genetic sequence of the novel coronavirus in a timely manner with the WHO and other countries.

China's measures are not only protecting its people but also protecting the people in the whole world, he said.

Hailing the high speed and massive scale of China's moves are rarely seen in the world, Tedros said it showed China's efficiency and the advantages of China's system.

Here is a short recap of the measures taken by the central government:

Locked down Wuhan, Hubei province, where the outbreak originated, and its satellite towns since Jan 23.

Military medical teams deployed to help the province and teams of medical volunteers from around the country rushed to help.

Governments at all levels swung into action with emergency measures and are making every effort to identify anyone infected and trace and monitor those they have been in close contact with.

Construction workers working around the clock to build two makeshift hospitals in suburban Wuhan to treat affected patients.

The experience of China is worth learning for other countries, WHO Director-General Tedros said, adding that he believes the measures China has taken will effectively control and finally prevail over the epidemic.

The WHO does not recommend the evacuation of nationals, and called on the international community to remain calm and not overreact.

News background

Since the disease broke out in Wuhan, Hubei province, China has continued to share information on combating the disease with the World Health Organization.

Earlier this month, China shared the genetic sequence of the new viral strain with the WHO, said Li Bin at a news conference held by the State Council Information Office last week.

The National Health Commission has set up a team of experts to conduct intensified exchanges with WHO officials, and four seminars had been held as of Jan 22. China also has invited WHO experts to Wuhan for inspections.
